COMMUNITY AWARENESS

H.U.G.S. 4 Childhood Cancer engages local communities to increase awareness of childhood cancer and to support families impacted by a diagnosis. Through education, events, and partnerships, we empower communities to stand alongside children and families throughout their cancer journeys.

Each September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, H.U.G.S. hosts Gold Rush Days at schools across Alabama. Students and faculty wear gold in solidarity, and individuals impacted by childhood cancer share their personal stories to educate and inspire. Many participating schools also host Gold Nights at athletic events, where athletes wear gold ribbons and socks and student sections show their support by wearing gold. At The University of Alabama, H.U.G.S. has partnered with student organizations to distribute gold ribbons for fans to wear on September football game days, expanding awareness across campus.

Beyond schools, H.U.G.S. collaborates with local restaurants and businesses to host fundraising and awareness events that invite the broader community to get involved. In September, H.U.G.S. also coordinates landmark awareness initiatives, including lighting prominent buildings like the RSA Towers in Montgomery and Mobile in gold to spark conversation and visibility statewide.

On a national level, H.U.G.S. attends CureFest USA each year to advocate for childhood cancer awareness, collaborate with other nonprofit organizations, and mobilize public support. CureFest is one of the largest childhood cancer advocacy events in the country and plays a vital role in uniting the childhood cancer community.

H.U.G.S. also leverages social media to share stories, highlight opportunities to serve, and connect with childhood cancer families across the nation. Through educational content and personal narratives, we shed light on the realities of childhood cancer and amplify the voices of those impacted.
